Win Goes to Gladiators in Tight Contest
|
The Phoenix Gladiators took San Francisco pitcher Jonathan Allen's best shot and still were able to claim a win at San Francisco Grounds. The final score had Phoenix getting past the Fire, 6-2. Allen went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 3. The Fire fall to 5-7 and continue their sputtering start to the 2021 season.
Phoenix used the timely hitting of Nelson Mendoza to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Gladiators on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Mendoza said.
