The World Series got off to a quiet start, with the host Winchester Mountaineers taking a low-scoring, 2-1 win over the Cornwall Royals. Winchester left-hander Ricardo Martinez was marvelous at Mountaineers Park. The Mountaineers now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series.

Cornwall had little success against Martinez and his changeup. Martinez tossed 89 pitches over 6.1 innings for the Mountaineers.

"I tried to establish all my pitches early," said Martinez.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Mountaineers Park in Winchester.
