Corpus Christi Takes 2-1 Series Lead with Walk-off Win
|
The Corpus Christi Mermen nearly wasted a strong game from starter Nate Holyfield, but were saved by some timely hitting in a 9th inning walk-off win over the Encinitas Eskimo Brothers today.
Holyfield pitched well in the 3-2 win at Mermen Field. He threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball. The win allowed Corpus Christi to seize a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 Division Series.
The decisive blow was delivered by Gary Draeger in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a 2-run double off 23-year old right-handed pitcher Ken Griffey to win the game for Corpus Christi. The home crowd went nuts.
Holyfield attributed the win to "everyone pulling their weight."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Mermen Field in Corpus Christi.
