Jacksonville first baseman Kenneth Bates had a big day at Nationals Park against the Crystal Lake Killers. The 20-year-old, who is not typically considered a big threat with the bat, went 5-for-7 and led to the 27-13 Nationals triumph over Crystal Lake.
"Hey, I'm as surprised as you guys are," Bates said in his postgame comments, smiling as he scolded the press corps for underestimating him. "Maybe I'm not so bad at the plate after all."
Kenneth Bates hit an RBI double in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, grounded out in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and grounded out in the 8th.
This year, Bates is batting .397 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. In 25 games he has scored 34 times.
