Ayres Put in Cooler, Hitless Against Picture Rocks
Thursday, July 18th , 2024
For once, it was the Jacksonville Nationals picking up the slack for Mike Ayres.
The club's "offensive catalyst," as Jacksonville manager Zack Glomski has frequently called him, went uncharacteristically silent and saw his 20-game hitting streak snapped by the Picture Rocks Raptors. Ayres was bailed out by the rest of the Nationals, however, who stopped the Raptors, 5-3.
The 20-year-old center fielder finished the day 0-for-3, and told reporters at the postgame press conference that "everybody did their job but me."
"Not that it was a huge problem -- we still won the game," he said with a grin. "The streak was a good run though. I'll try to start another one tomorrow."
In the 2024 season Ayres is hitting .399 with 31 home runs.
