Smashing Success: Herd Wallops 3 HR
Wednesday, May 12th , 2021
Jacksonville Nationals second baseman Caleb Herd put on a dazzling display of power at Ballpark of San Bernardino against the San Bernardino Flight. In the 7-4 Nationals victory, Herd penned his name into the record books, slamming a trio of home runs in one of baseball's finest single-day efforts.
"He can hit them out anywhere, right, center, left, it doesn't matter," San Bernardino manager Joe Mills said. "He's super strong and stays on the ball so well."
Along with his three home runs, the 20-year-old had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
"Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off," Herd said after the game, when asked about his hitting philosophy. "The right pitch will come, and when it does, be prepared to run the bases. Or trot around them, like I did today."
Caleb Herd hit a solo-shot off Jim Unknown in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Jim Unknown in the 5th, flied out in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off Jim Unknown in the 9th.
To date, Herd has collected 20 hits for a .253 average. He has posted 11 home runs, scored 15 runs and driven in 22 runs.
