Cyclones Score Late to Upend Shamrocks, 8-5
|
The Sikeston Shamrocks got a superb performance from pitcher Macho Martinez, but the Mt. Vernon Cyclones still won the game, 8-5. Martinez threw 6.0 innings allowing 2 runs. By defeating Sikeston, the second-place Cyclones improved to 67-58.
A critical at-bat came in the top of the eighth inning when the Cyclones sent 19-year-old catcher Yoshihito Abe to the plate with the bases loaded. The youngster shook off the pressure and hit a 2-run single, to put Mt. Vernon on top, 7-4.
Abe told the Mt. Vernon Daily: "I don't know which I enjoy more -- being a ballplayer or the perks that come with being a ballplayer."
