Wranglers Upend Shamrocks, 5-1
|
The Newport News Wranglers downed the Sikeston Shamrocks, 5-1, at Shamrocks Park. Stellar pitching by Alex Gonzales had a lot to do with it. The right-hander, who is tied for 3rd in the SL2 with a 1.30 WHIP, handcuffed his opponent all game. The winning pitcher was Gonzales, now 6-3. He tossed 6 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 4. Roger Mims earned the save, his 1st in 1 tries.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Sean Hardin? The Newport News center fielder had a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Wranglers on top, 2-0. For the game, Hardin had 1 double and 1 single in 3 at-bats.
"Alex just settled in and did what he does," said Newport News manager Adam Tate.
Newport News, at 59-38, occupies second place in the Sub League 2 East Division.
