Alpines Fall Short, 1-0, at Mt. Vernon

The Mt. Vernon Cyclones took Savannah pitcher Steve Shewmaker's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Mt. Vernon Grounds. The final score had Mt. Vernon getting past the Alpines, 1-0. Shewmaker went 6 innings and allowed 1 run, striking out 3. Tony Martinez came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 3.1 innings. His record now stands at 2-1. Cory Hobbs earned the save for Mt. Vernon, his 7th of the year.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Cyclones had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when shortstop Adrian McCoy hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Steve Shewmaker and made the score 1-0, Cyclones. McCoy was 1-2 with a hit by pitch.
In comments to the Mt. Vernon Citizen, McCoy admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
Mt. Vernon is now 36-33, Savannah 31-38.
