The Little Rock Golden Gophers rode a solid performance from 21-year-old starting pitcher Nick Kern to a win, beating the Santa Ana Black Aces, 2-1, at Little Rock Grounds. The win belonged to Mike Collins in relief. His record improves to 2-0. Bobby Jones took the loss for Santa Ana. The save was credited to Gregg Daugherty, his 20th.

Had Paul DeVaul not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, DeVaul hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Golden Gophers.

"I felt good. I felt like I was locating the ball well and I was able to keep them off-balance," said Kern.

The Golden Gophers improved their record to 63-20 with the win over Santa Ana.
