Royals Edge Eagles, 9-8, to Open WC
|
Indianapolis first baseman Mark Payne pounded Cincinnati Royals pitchers at The Castle, but it was not enough to keep the Eagles from falling, 9-8, in Game 1 of the Wildcard Game. Payne went 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once, though he couldn't keep the Eagles from slipping to a 1-0 deficit in the best-of-3 series.
Had Chris Caruso not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Caruso hit a 2-run single. That made the score 9-8, in favor of the Royals.
"The boys were really swinging the bats today," winning manager Brad McBride said.
The next game is set to be played for Saturday, October 2nd , 2021 at Eagles Stadium in Indianapolis.
