The Providence Hex handed the Newport Unicorns a sound defeat, 16-2, at Ballpark of Providence. Ruben Guevara was a main contributor to the win. He was 1 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4 for Providence. Ed Gonell, the winner, improved to 7-8. He held Newport to 2 runs on 6 hits over 8 innings, while racking up 6 strikeouts. The Hex move to 46-40 with the win, while the Unicorns drop to 32-54.
In the bottom of the first, Guevara had a grand slam home run for Providence. It was his 20th home run of the season and put the Hex on top, 4-0.
"You can't sugarcoat this one," said Newport manager Victor Sepulveda. "We got the snot knocked out of us."
