The stakes were high. Cesar Escobedo was ready.

The left-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Engineers Ballpark, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the St. Catharines Blue Jays to victory in Game 1 of the Division Series. Escobedo held the Santa Rosa Desperados to 6 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 10. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for St. Catharines, which now leads 1-0.

Escobedo was in the zone all game. He frustrated Santa Rosa hitters while giving the Blue Jays 9 innings of quality work. Escobedo threw 114 pitches, allowing 6 hits and getting 10 punchouts.

"Cesar was cooking with gas," said St. Catharines manager Walt DeRosier.
