Unicorns Win, 5-3, Versus Providence
|
The Newport Unicorns had to overcome a fine effort from Providence pitcher Frank Rivera to win, 5-3, at Ballpark of Providence. Rivera went 6 innings and allowed 1 run. The winner was Nick Combs in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Rich Abril took the loss. Allen D'Amico earned the save for Newport, his 2nd of the year.
Newport used the clutch hitting of Colt Stovall to snag the win. The catcher drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Unicorns ahead, 5-3. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.
Newport manager Victor Sepulveda called it "a pretty good win."
The Hex, at 35-31, have lost 4 straight games.
